What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is a sugar-free sweetener derived from natural sources, and is also produced in the human body as a by-product of a normal metabolism1.
What does Xylitol do?
When sugars and carbohydrates are broken down by plaque bacteria in your mouth, they produce plaque acids. These acids can eat away at the enamel on your teeth. This can promote tooth decay and eventually cause cavities. Unlike sugar, Xylitol is not broken down by plaque bacteria. Because it does not break down, Xylitol can help keep a neutral pH balance in your mouth, which helps protect your teeth from tooth decay.
In several studies, scientists have found that people who regularly chew gum that contains Xylitol have a lower occurrence of tooth decay than people who do not chew gum that contains Xylitol (2, 3, and 4). Chewing gum that contains Xylitol has been shown, when chewed 5 times per day, to reduce plaque, and make it easier to remove plaque when brushing5.
Is Xylitol Safe For Dogs?
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has reported that Xylitol may be toxic for dogs. Xylitol is often used as a sweetener - a substitute for sugar - in sugarless gum. Products containing Xylitol, including sugar free gums and candies as well as drug products such as toothpaste, have a 30 year history of safe human use in the US and worldwide.
We encourage people to seek the counsel of their veterinarians about how to keep their dogs safe and healthy.
Which Cadbury Adams Products Contain Xylitol?
Cadbury Adams products containing Xylitol include Trident® Sugarless gum, Trident® fusion flavors, and Stride gum.
Where can I find Xylitol?
Xylitol is often used as a sweetener - a substitute for sugar - in sugarless gum. Scientists believe that Xylitol is best used orally either in hard candies or sugarless gum, because these formats coat tooth surfaces. (1) You can find Xylitol in several varieties of Trident sugarless gum including Trident and Trident fusion flavors.

Trident Xtra Care™
How does Trident Xtra Care™ work?
When you eat, plaque bacteria eat too. As a result, the bacteria produce plaque acids. These plaque acids cause calcium and phosphate to migrate out of the enamel, eventually resulting in the formation of a white spot lesion (weakened enamel). Trident Xtra Care™ contains Recaldent. Recaldent is a milk-derived ingredient containing portions of a milk protein (casein), calcium and phosphate. The milk protein binds to the plaque layer on the surface of your tooth. When it then comes in contact with plaque acids, it releases the calcium and phosphate in a soluble form that penetrates the enamel, rebuilding weakened enamel from the inside out.
What is Recaldent®?
Recaldent® is an ingredient derived from casein (pronounced kay-seen), part of the protein found in cow's milk. Its technical name is casein phosphopeptides-amorphous calcium phosphate, or CPP-ACP.
Will Trident Xtra Care™ harm my teeth if I chew too much?
No, your teeth will only absorb the calcium and phosphate where it is needed. All the rest is washed away by the natural flow of your saliva.
Will Trident Xtra Care™ whiten my teeth?
No, Trident Xtra Care™ has been developed to strengthen your enamel, not whiten teeth. Trident White, however, has been specially formulated to remove stains and whiten teeth.
I can't eat dairy products, can I chew Trident Xtra Care™?
If you are allergic to milk proteins, then you should not chew Trident Xtra Care™. However, if you are lactose intolerant, which means you have difficulty digesting milk sugar (lactose), then Trident Xtra Care™ is fully digestible and safe to consume.
How much do I have to chew to get the strengthening benefits of Trident Xtra Care™?
Recaldent® starts rebuilding weakened enamel after chewing the very first piece and remains available for up to 3 hours after you start chewing. With regular chewing, white spot lesions, where cavities may begin to form, begin to rebuild and become stronger and more resistant to future plaque acid attacks.
Is Recaldent® found in the ingredient list on the pack?
Yes, it is called calcium casein peptone-calcium phosphate (Lactose-free milk derivative).
Trident White®
How exactly does Trident White® work to whiten teeth?
Trident White® is made with a proprietary whitening technology. Clinical studies have shown that chewing two pieces of Trident White® gum four times a day for four weeks can result in stain reduction when used in combination with your daily oral care regimen. A clinical study has also shown that chewing Trident White® gum prevents surface stains from forming.
What particular ingredients in Trident White® work to help whiten teeth?
Trident White® uses a unique, patented whitening technology that does not impact taste, unlike other ingredients like baking soda, bleach or dyes.
How does Trident White® assist in removing stains and stain prevention?
Trident White® uses a patented technology that incorporates a stain-removing ingredient that safely breaks surface-level tooth stains from food, wine, coffee, tea, tobacco, removing and allowing the movement of the mouth's natural moisture to wash away the stain. With regular usage, Trident White® helps prevent new stains from adhering to the tooth surface, thereby preventing stains.
Will Trident White® whiten all of my teeth or only the surfaces where I chew?
Clinical testing showed that Trident White® reduces stain on anterior tooth surfaces (front teeth), the teeth that have the most cosmetic significance.
How long will it take to see results from chewing Trident White®?
Chewing two pieces of Trident White® gum four times a day can result in stain reduction in as little as four weeks.
Does Trident White® prevent cavities?
Trident White® helps to reduce the risk of cavities when chewed after meals and snacks. This product is a complement to the daily dental regimen of brushing and flossing.
Can you send me the clinical results that led you to the whitening claim on your packaging?
Actual clinical data is considered proprietary information and has not been published.
Is one piece effective, or must it be two?
The serving size for Trident White® is two pieces.
